In collaboration with Sointula Lodge, this four-day, three-night retreat is a chance to explore our traditional territories with a focus on comfort, culture, and the wild essence of the Canadian Pacific Northwest. Each cabin is a cozy retreat after a day of adventure, and meals showcase local ingredients and the coast's bounty.
We weave traditional knowledge into every part of your stay. Your Kwakwaka’wakw guides share stories passed down through generations as you explore the region's ecosystems and cultural landmarks — from ancient cedar forests to salmon-filled rivers.
What's included
A full day into Indigenous Protected Areas and the river systems where grizzly bears feed on salmon, watched from a safe and respectful distance. Black bears turn rocks for crab on the shell beaches at low tide. From August 1 to the end of the season the salmon run decides the day: we follow the bears up the rivers, and some sites are reached on foot, so moderate hiking is part of September and October stays.
The water between is its own safari. Pacific white-sided dolphins ride the bow, humpback whales feed in Blackfish Sound, Northern Resident orcas pass through Johnstone Strait from July, and eagles, sea lions, seals and sea otters are with you all season through the Broughton Archipelago.
Your guides are Kwakwaka’wakw Knowledge Keepers, and the culture runs through the whole stay — the history of these waters as you travel them, the names of the places you pass, stories passed down through generations.
In Alert Bay, a guided visit to the U'mista Cultural Centre covers the potlatch system and its historic artifacts, with a look at culturally modified trees and the practices that have shaped this land for thousands of years. Evenings at the lodge bring storytelling, a traditional bone game or dancing.
Three nights in a rustic cabin with an ocean view, a short walk from the main lodge and the waterfront. Meals showcase local ingredients and the coast's bounty, served in the oceanview dining room — all meals and drinks, from arrival dinner to departure lunch.
Once the boat is tied up for the night, the evening is yours: the sauna and hot tub, hammocks and a fire pit under the stars, or a sunset paddle on the quiet water around Malcolm Island.

The lodge
The wilderness resort property is rich in history and unique architecture. The main lodge is the centre of the property, with an oceanview dining room and places to relax and connect.
After a day on tour, evenings offer the chance to unwind — cultural storytelling, a traditional bone game or dancing. Or the sauna and hot tub, hammocks and a fire pit for cozy evenings under the stars.

Nestled in the forest, several cabin styles blend rustic charm with modern comforts. Every cabin has an ocean view and is a short walk from the main lodge and the waterfront.

Evenings
Optional activities at the resort, once the boat is tied up for the night.
Warm up in the cedar sauna, soak in the hot tub, or take a cold plunge. A simple way to unwind after a day on the water.
End the day with a calm paddle on the quiet water around Malcolm Island. As the light fades, seals often surface nearby, and you might catch a bald eagle or, with luck, a passing whale.

Sea Wolf Adventures is owned and run by Mike Willie, Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw, who grew up on these waters. Our guides are Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, honoured members of the communities whose territories you travel through.
You are a guest in someone's home, hearing its history from the family that has travelled it for generations.

Good to know
When booking, tell us about any health concerns or dietary needs. Allergies must be reported before arrival. Refunds are not issued for weather or wildlife viewing conditions, so we strongly recommend travel, trip interruption and cancellation insurance.
All of our lodge packages leave from Port McNeill, BC. You will receive an email with specific timings and instructions in the week before your departure.

One small suitcase or duffel per person, because of boat space. Store anything else at our office.
The boat days are long and relaxed, and most of the time you are seated and watching. In May the bear viewing is from the water. From August 1 to the end of the season the salmon are running and we follow the bears up the rivers, so the plan can change without notice and some days reaching the viewing site means a walk of up to about an hour on forest trail and gravel bars with your guides. In heavy rain the rivers can rise to levels that are not safe, and that can happen during the salmon season. On those days we stay out of the rivers and switch to boat-based bear viewing instead; your guides make that call each morning. At the lodge, the cabins are a short walk from the main building along boardwalks.
For September and October stays, please be comfortable with moderate hiking before you book. If anyone in your party has a mobility question, tell us when you reserve and we will plan around it wherever we can.
No. These are wild animals in their own territory, and we will not promise what we cannot control. What we can promise is that our guides know these waters and where the bears and whales tend to be at each point in the season, and that sightings are the norm rather than the exception.
Sea Wolf Adventures plays a role in protection and conservation in our territory, and salmon restoration is one of the efforts we push forward. A $35 per person salmon stewardship fee is included in the package price to keep this work going. Salmon is life.
Sea Wolf Adventures and Sointula Lodge are fully insured tour providers with comprehensive coverage, including liability and tenant legal liability insurance. Third-party partners involved in your experience — seaplane transfers, boating excursions — also carry full liability insurance.
